A Fond Farewell to James P. “Jim” Regan: BELD’s Dedicated Commissioner

After 19 years of dedicated service, James P. Regan—known simply as Jim to everyone—has announced his retirement from the Braintree Electric Light Department (BELD) Board of Commissioners. Jim has been a cornerstone of BELD since 2006, embodying the spirit of community, leadership, and unwavering advocacy for the residents of Braintree.

Jim’s contributions to BELD and the town of Braintree are immeasurable. His passion for supporting BELD’s mission, ensuring low rates, and providing exceptional service has left an unforgettable mark on both the organization and the community.

Living in Braintree, right where BELD was founded in 1892, Jim has always championed the needs of residents, employees, and BELD management alike. Whether working alongside General Manager Bill Bottiggi to maintain affordable rates and high standards of service or representing BELD at community events, Jim was a tireless advocate for everyone. His commitment to fairness and generosity will not soon be forgotten.

Jim was a familiar face at BELD-sponsored events, especially the beloved Nelson Chin Summer Concert Series. From announcing the bands to raffling off gifts and shaking hands with attendees, Jim brought a personal touch that made every event feel special. It was Jim’s idea to rename the series in honor of Nelson Chin, the late Director of Braintree’s Parks and Recreation Department, whose presence and joy at the concerts were legendary. The renaming was a heartfelt gesture that resonated with the entire community.

Beyond events, Jim’s involvement extended to supporting local charities and initiatives, including the Relay for Life, a cause close to his heart. His enthusiasm for community service was evident in his every action, always striving to make Braintree a better place for its residents.

As Secretary of the Light Board, Jim played a critical role in BELD’s strategic direction. His leadership contributed to significant initiatives like the commissioning of the Thomas A. Watson Generating Station and BELD’s investment in renewable energy through the Spruce Mountain Wind Farm. These efforts have helped ensure the reliability of Braintree’s power supply while maintaining a forward-looking approach to sustainability.

Jim’s dedication to BELD employees matched his unwavering commitment to the town. He ensured their achievements were celebrated, their efforts recognized, and their voices heard. Whether delivering heartfelt remarks at the Annual Braintree Day Parade, highlighting their accomplishments during live radio interviews, or recognizing their hard work at all BELD-sponsored events, Jim consistently demonstrated his pride in the BELD team.

Jim’s dedication to public service seems to run in the family. His son, Kenny Regan, was recently awarded the Northeast Public Power Association Ambassador Award for his contributions to the Braintree community—a testament to the values Jim has demonstrated throughout his service and the enduring impact he’s made.

Though Jim’s retirement marks the end of an era, the door at BELD will always remain open for him. His impact on BELD, Braintree, and all who know him cannot be overstated. We thank Jim for his years of service, his compassion, and his boundless energy.

As we bid farewell, we wish Jim and his wonderful family all the best in this next chapter. Jim, you will be deeply missed, but your legacy will continue to shine brightly in the heart of Braintree.

Thank you, Jim, for everything.
